EILC - Erasmus Intensive Language Courses 2011/2012

Introduction

Erasmus Intensive Language Courses (EILC) is an initiative supported by the European Commission to enable Erasmus students adapt better both socially and academically in a host country. EILC courses are organized in the following countries: Belgium, Bulgaria , Cyprus, Croatia, Czech Republic,  Denmark,  Estonia, Finland,  Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta ,  the Netherlands ,  Norway, Poland,  Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain,  Sweden, Switzerland, and Turkey.

The EILCs are open to students who have been selected for an Erasmus student for study/placement period in the European Lifelong Learning/Erasmus programme. Comenius and Gruntvig Assistants can also participate, provided that there are places available on a course.

Participating students do not have to pay for tuition, books or any other study materials. Students are expected to cover housing and other living costs during the period of the course, additional costs may occur for activities during the week-end trips. More detailed information is given in the course description.

EILC applications are to be submitted electronically to the students’ home institution, which will be responsible for forwarding the application to the National Agency of the EILC organising institution. Comenius and Gruntvig Assistants apply directly to the National Agency of the EILC organising institution.

EILC in Estonia

"Kõik koos: Väike konn, väike konn, ütle, kus su kodu on" - If you plan to come to Estonia as an Erasmus student, and you don't know yet, what these words mean, you should go to the EILC lessons…

/Ingo from Germany/

I like the sound of Estonian language. It is fascinating to learn a language so different from others. Oh, and I love those Estonian rummikoogid and kama-sweets!

 /Karen from Germany/

EILC courses for Erasmus students have been organized in Estonia since 2001 by the Erasmus team of Estonian National Agency (former Socrates National Agency, now Estonian Centre for Educational Programmes) in cooperation with the universities. Every year students from different European countries have combined learning Estonian with enjoying different cultural and social activities offered within the programme.

Over the years the number of participating students has rapidly grown along with their satisfaction with the experience. All participating students have reflected the positive influence of the courses in adapting to a new linguistic and cultural environment and developing contacts with other exchange students in different universities.
